On Thursday, March 20, from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, STEP FuturAbility District (Piazza Adriano Olivetti, 1 – Milan), the space dedicated to exploring new technologies and helping people navigate a rapidly evolving world, will host a screening of The Iron Giant. This event is part of the cultural and scientific program of STEP, which, through the Tech, si gira! film series, aims to offer a space for examining the complexity of the technological world through cinema.
Released in 1999 and directed by Brad Bird, The Iron Giant is an animated masterpiece set in 1950s America. The film tells the touching story of the friendship between Hogarth, a curious young boy, and a giant robot from outer space. While the government sees the robot as a threat, Hogarth fights to protect him, proving that he is not a weapon but a being capable of choosing his own destiny. The film explores themes such as free will and the fear of the unknown, encouraging reflection on the role of artificial intelligence and the importance of technological education.
Following the screening, a discussion will be held with Giulietta Fara, Director of the Future Film Festival, and Federico Cella, journalist at Il Corriere della Sera, exploring how these themes influence society and our vision of the future. The event is organized in collaboration with 24 Frame Future Fest, Italy’s leading festival dedicated to animation, media arts, visual effects, virtual and augmented reality, gaming, and artificial intelligence, now in its 25th edition.

Tech, si gira! – Conversations Between Cinema and the Future

After the great success of its first edition—attended by over 1,200 people and featuring discussions on robotics and artificial intelligence—Tech, si gira! returns with a new selection of cult and visionary films. This year’s program expands its focus to new technological and social challenges, including climate change and space economy technologies.
Each screening will be followed by an open discussion moderated by Massimo Temporelli, the series’ scientific director and curator, along with industry experts, scientists, journalists, and academics. The film series provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the technological future and foster debate on highly relevant issues.
